When it comes to the term “Otaku Killer,” there are probably a thousand Hamtaros for a thousand people — everyone has their own daisuki (favorite). Some adore sailor uniforms, some prefer black or white stockings, and others can’t resist twin tails…
But among all these styles, two major genres have always reigned supreme: JK and Lolita.
Today, let’s talk about something that feels both familiar and mysterious — Lolita fashion.
01 Why is it called “Lolita”?
When people hear the word Lolita, many immediately think of Vladimir Nabokov’s famous novel Lolita. After all, the movie adaptation left such iconic scenes that it’s almost impossible not to make the connection.
It was precisely because of this novel and its film adaptation that the word “Lolita” became synonymous with an image of an innocent and pure young girl.
In reality, the Japanese concept of Lolita has little to do with the novel itself.
They simply borrowed the word and gave it a new meaning — representing a sweet, innocent, and cute young girl. Girls under the age of 14 were called the “Lolita generation,” or simply “loli,” which is where the popular term “萝莉” (loli) comes from.
02 Why Did Lolita Become So Popular?
As we all know, Asian girls are quite different from their Western counterparts, who often aspire to look more mature and sexy.
In contrast, many Asian girls prefer a younger, cuter aesthetic — the more kawaii (adorable) it looks, the better (and, unsurprisingly, the more it appeals to men).
And coincidentally, Victorian-era children’s clothing and the ornate, elaborate styles of the Rococo period naturally make anyone look irresistibly kawaii (cute and charming).
This style of clothing was popularized in the 1980s by a manga called Kissxxxx. Suddenly, the streets of Japan were filled with adorable girls dressed in Lolita fashion.
In the 1990s, X Japan took the world by storm, and along the way introduced the world to Gothic Lolita fashion. In an era dominated by alternative subcultures, it’s hard to imagine any member of the Sōai Family not having fallen in love with this style.
By the turn of the millennium, Mana, the legendary guitarist of Malice Mizer, had become the iconic figure representing Gothic Lolita fashion.
Shortly after the turn of the millennium, a film called Kamui Girl hit the big screen, propelling the already eye-catching Lolita fashion into global attention.
From that point on, Lolita fashion firmly secured its place in the world of style.
03 How Many Types of Lolita Are There?
After all this, for most people—except seasoned enthusiasts—Lolita probably all looks pretty much the same: poofy skirts, lace trims, gloves, and so on.
However, if you say this to a true Lolita wearer, you’re very likely to get an eye-roll (and if they’re in a bad mood, maybe even a slap).
So, how many types of Lolita are there?
Sweet Lolita
As the name suggests, Sweet Lolita leans toward a cute and sugary aesthetic, emphasizing innocence and charm.
This style of Lolita features a generous amount of lace and frills, with skirts typically reaching knee-length. Common colors are naturally sweet and cute pastel shades, such as pink, baby blue, cream, and light brown—reminiscent of macarons.
Most Sweet Lolita outfits feature prints of flowers, fruits, or desserts. When styling for photos or events, they are often paired with plush toys, dessert-themed accessories, teddy bears, or unicorns.
Of course, there’s also a “sweet-cool” version of Sweet Lolita, which primarily features black and pink as its main colors. It still retains all the typical characteristics and standards of Sweet Lolita—so while it has a cool edge, it remains undeniably sweet.
Classic Lolita is the most common and iconic Lolita style, blending elements of Victorian, Baroque, and Rococo fashion.
Unlike Sweet Lolita, which highlights a youthful and innocent charm, Classical Lolita emphasizes a more mature, graceful, and feminine elegance.

This style of Lolita is mostly flower-themed, featuring intricate, elaborate designs and a French court-inspired waistline.
Colors are usually low-saturation tones such as pure white, dusty pink, burgundy, navy, brown, and black. The overall effect often resembles a classical oil painting, giving it a very refined and traditional look.
Gothic Lolita is easy to understand—it’s essentially a blend of Gothic style and Lolita fashion.
Since it’s inspired by Gothic style, the outfits naturally feature black as the main color, often accented with black ribbons, dark lipstick, and heavy eyeliner, creating a bold and dramatic look.
The three styles introduced earlier are the main pillars of Lolita fashion. As trends evolved, many substyles emerged based on these core looks:
Princess Lolita
Princess Lolita is a style developed from Classical Lolita. As the name suggests, this type of Lolita often wears a small crown or dresses adorned with crown motifs and other lavish decorations.
Besides crowns, a princess look naturally calls for a touch of sparkle and elegance. Accessories like pearls, flowers, and bows are commonly used to create a fairy-tale, bling-filled effect.
Kuro and Shiro are Japanese words that translate to “black” and “white” in English.
Both of these Lolita styles emphasize monochrome outfits—either entirely black or entirely white, with no other colors allowed.
Wa Lolita is a transliteration that means “Japanese-style Lolita.” This style retains the traditional poofy skirts, lace, and other Lolita elements while incorporating Japanese-inspired details.
It typically features fabrics printed with Japanese-style patterns, and common accessories include obis (waist sashes), haori jackets, wooden sandals, and masks.
Qi Lolita is a substyle similar to Wa Lolita, but it incorporates traditional Chinese clothing elements, such as Qipao or Hanfu, making it a Chinese-style Lolita.
Common accessories include fans, tassel ornaments, hair buns, and hairpins.
